Battleship Cove, Falls River Massachusetts – February 17-18, 2007
Boy Scout Troop 54 camped over night in hanging sailor’s racks on the Battleship Massachusetts, docked in Falls River Massachusetts. We scrambled all over the place, played cards and manhunt around the ship. It was a crazy ruckus but unbelievably amusing.
Our trip began on Saturday morning, when we met at the church and arranged to carpool together. It would be three hours until we got to Massachusetts. We arrived at around 10:00. We were impressed by the large size of the battleship. There was also a submarine (COOOOOL!) and a Russian patrol boat docked next to it in the same cove. Two small PT boats were in a building next to the cove. We went up a huge walkway that was very long and got on the Battleship. We got our own separate area and Scouts rushed to the bunks that hung over each other (WARNING: the bunks could fall).
Next, we went to a super cool nautical museum. They had every thing imaginable from the model of the Titanic to a German World War II ship. After the museum we went back to the cove and boarded the submarine (it was incredibly tight!). We also visited the top deck and insides of the small Russian ship.
Back on the Battleship, we then had a great dinner in the mess hall. They showed us a movie about the ship and we got to meet a sailor that served on it during the war. Unfortunately, one of the most fun days of our lives came to an end with lights out.
At 7:00 in the morning everyone packed up, we ate breakfast, and headed back home. It felt like we had left one of the most unique “camping” places in the world.
